TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Part of meeting the needs of our neighbors who are homeless or unsheltered is knowing they exist, and where they are.

It’s why Astra Mental Health & Recovery and other community partners do a Point in Time count twice a year. Kristy Hobbs, team manager for the HOPE program at Astra, visited Eye on NE Kansas to talk about it.

The Summer Point in Time Count is planned for June 24. They’ll also have representatives available to meet with people at the MAP sessions on June 23 and 25.

Astra Mental Health & Recovery is asking for donations to support the count, including nonperishable food, snacks like granola bars and fruit snacks, socks, bug spray, hydration packs and sunscreen. Donations can be delivered to 2401 SW 6th.

Information gained from the Point in Time count is used to help determine how much federal assistance communities receive for programs to assist people who are homeless.
