The City of Madison is expanding mental health support for first responders through a new partnership with WellStone.
City leaders say the program is designed to address the emotional and psychological challenges police officers and firefighters face while serving the community. The initiative comes as WellStone expands its presence in Madison, making its services more accessible to residents and first responders alike.Karen Petersen, WellStone’s director of development, said the program will provide multiple levels of care.
“The program will include our psychosocial services and assessments, it will also include counseling, of course…psychiatric services,” Petersen said.
Petersen said first responders are among the groups most at risk for mental health challenges because of the traumatic situations they often encounter on the job.
“Statistics show that our first responders really are at greater risk of suffering from mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, suicidal ideations, and PTSD,” Petersen said. “So, to become a resource for those individuals who use so much for the rest of us is really meaningful.”
Madison Fire Chief Brandy Williams said the partnership reflects the city’s commitment to supporting the overall well-being of its first responders.
“It’s great to be able to work for a city that prioritizes the mental health of the first responders with everything that we see on a daily basis,” Williams said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to be able to have somewhere that we can go and work with professionals to discuss whatever we might be going through.”
Williams said mental health has long carried a stigma within public safety professions, but that attitudes are beginning to change.
“It’s always been a stigma that’s been attached to it that nobody wants to talk about that feeling, but the truth of the matter is, you know, every single one of us has something that we carry with us on a daily basis, and if we say we don’t, then we’re probably not being honest with ourselves,” Williams said.
Under the partnership, Madison City will be using a portion of its annual budget to give firefighters and police officers unlimited access to WellStone’s services.
