SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Parenting is hard, and every parent knows the pressure can pile up fast. Mental Health Awareness of Michiana says dads need support, too.
The Charles Black Community Center was packed Saturday for the “Celebrating Dads BBQ.” There was free food, games, music and raffles, but there was also connection and community resources.
Groups like Goodwill Industries, the St. Joseph County Department of Health and the Family and Children’s Center were there, making sure parents know where to turn when life gets heavy.
“Sometimes people don’t have a lot of support and just getting out and talking to people you know and see all week is fun, it helps get you out of the house,” said Rebecca Brabham and Timothy Powers, attendees.
Renata Williams, director of community access resources and education unit at the St. Joseph County Department of Health, said dads were surprised by the focus.
“I think that they’re surprised that this is specifically towards dads and we want to hear from dads and what’s important to them,” Williams said.
The director of community outreach and education for Mental Health Awareness of Michiana says this message matters most: It’s okay to not be okay. And if you need a hand, there are plenty reaching back to lift you up.
