LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Inside the UMC TLC2 Foundation Cancer Center is a different kind of treatment, an informational discussion called ‘Living Well’, that is currently highlighting integrative medicine.

It is a holistic, evidence-based practice that incorporates everything from acupuncture to massage therapy and behavioral health that compliments regular medical treatment. Dr. Marisabelle Trevino leads that kind of healing at UMC.

She says experiences in her life made her want to give back to the greater west Texas community.

“I got into acupuncture about four years ago now,” Trevino said. “That was due to my aunt having cancer coming out of school, so that was a very big change in my life. I thought our cancer patients deserve more.”

Patients and caregivers gathered to hear how this medicine treats more than the disease, but the whole person. Trevino says the quality of life for these patients can improve with all that it has to offer.

“Not every patient is the same and that’s what’s great about integrative medicine,” Trevino said. “You might like acupuncture; the other patient may not. They might benefit from massage therapy; we might need some behavior health to take care of that mental state of getting through what is currently happening. That’s what I love about it.”

These ‘Living Well’ sessions hope to educate the community as they get to have more personal conversations regarding treatment. The results are already coming into play and paying off in significant ways.

“I have seen so many of our breast cancer patients with their hot flashes, night sweats, come back and say I feel better,” Trevino said. “Even if it’s after one or two treatments. We’ve seen about 40% of our patients get better every 10 weeks here with acupuncture here.”
