Could depression, dementia, and poor oral health all have one uniting link? The gut microbiome contains 200 more genes than human cells, and research shows its strong impact on mental illness, brain health, and chronic inflammation.
Professor of epidemiology at King’s College London Tim Spector breaks down the science of how gut microbes produce the chemicals that shape your mood, your immune system, and your cognitive health, and why the standard Western diet has been systematically destroying them for 50 years.

What are the 3 foods? I’m not going to watch this entire thing
17:44 literally
I hope Tim isnt going to sell anything in this video, he is hard to listen to compared to others in this field
Who is eating baobab Tim?
Why those do those doctors never seem to be in superior shape themselves?
Great lecture
Thank you!!!!
I have hyperoxaluria, which is sensitivity to oxalates, so eating 30 plants could be extremely harmful to me. I did incredible damage to my body by eating vegan and vegetarian for many years. I highly recommend the book Toxic Superfoods as an introduction and general knowledge, then do your own research on the topic. Also, more evidence-based testimony is that a couple years ago, I had high TSH and hypothyroid, and the doctor wanted me to take medication. I read research that there is a correlation between oxalates and thyroid disease and told her I thought I was on the right track. A couple weeks ago, I had updated labs done, and my TSH is now normal!! This is thanks to a low oxalate diet and calcium citrate with meals as calcium binds to oxalates. Oxalate overload is an epidemic in the US, and probably the world. People should eat for their biotype, and not pay mind to the many overgeneralizations such as this, IMHO.
a variety of organ meat
big think is better than this
Brits talk too much with little action, I guess British Brainwashing Corporation is a microcosm of the society. Why 1 hour video for this kind of information, which could have taken 20 mins to deliver?
I hate this kind of titles. Why are viewers always regarded as simpletons…
How these talks 'related to "fasting(where fasting will rejuvenate revitalise minds and body)..?! Peace be upon us all 🙏
He is wrong about eating dairy. 70% of the world population is lactose intolerant. Recommending dairy which will make 7 out of 10 sick is bad advice. Most of the other advice is good.
This video is pure gold. I suffer with IBS for most of my adult life and did already know most or the things mentioned here. But those that i did not are extremely insightful and helpful.
Thank you very much.
Thank you, Dr. Tim Spector! You and the Zoe team have added so much guidance and expertise to my eating habits and the importance of the gut microbiome.
Depression is not the main topic by any means – I'd rethink this title. That being said, this is a fantastic video that everyone should watch and take notes from.
Great video! FYI – there’s a typo on the slide at 33:26. It should read 2. Eat 30 plants per week, not per day.

I found a cure for insomnia…
Stupid title! All you guys told us so far is incorrect. Lol
If we talk about little waste, the carnivore diet must be best and fiber-rich diets are worst. More poop, more waste. This is of course not what he might have meant and I am already out after 5 minutes.
High salt kinchi = lower blood pressure/higher stomach cancer
Are you kinda saying these microorganisms created us using evolution so they could use us as houses?
Saturated fat doesn’t cause inflammation.
* Some studies find increases in inflammation when saturated fat is consumed as part of a diet high in refined carbohydrates, excess calories, or highly processed foods.
* Weight gain itself tends to increase inflammation, regardless of whether the excess calories come from fat or carbohydrates.
* Foods that contain saturated fat (such as beef, dairy, and chocolate) often do not show the same effects as isolated saturated fats studied in laboratories.
My observation says that the body is dealing with viruses as they were here first resulting in immune system over stimulation, hence chronic inflammation.
As people now travel globally old and new virus strains plus those wonderful bacteria constantly evolving, we the hosts are very good at passing them on. Of course this does not include lab assisted ones either.
Man has reached the top of the food chain for sure. For how long his arrogance ignores the mighty changes in Nature that we do know occur. Scientists have a lot to do both in the lab and Educating the so called decision makers. You are amongst others opening such thinking but right now ignorance rules.
Stay carnivore !!! no counting calories, perfect gut biom, no cravings, steady energy…eat like our ancestors and avoid plants, they are chemical poison…study more 🙂
Tim needs to study food anthropology.
Chew on bones and meat to develop the jaw.
Eat rainbow…bloody red meat is enough 🙂
Bitter means poison !!!
10 years carnivore, alive again with no health problem…sugar is a serial killer.
Humans are the only species that will spray food with poison to stop other species from eating then eat it themself LOL
Not sure they have a full understanding of what a healthy microbiome is yet. Learning more requires being open to the fact that there are things you don't know. All im saying is the microbiome and its interplay w the rest of the body is very complex, don't let anyone lock you into a view.
I also want to eat 30 different types of food a week, but I can't afford organic food, and non-organic food contains chemical residues.
Holy ananas. This has to be the most bot-populated comment section I've ever seen. 😀
When do we get a gut nutrition expert who does not have a supplement company ?
The gut connection is what surprised me most 😅 I kept focusing on calories and workouts while ignoring everything else. Still felt bloated and tired. Then in a womens forum I came across Eat.Like.a.Woman.Protocol -"Loren.Gren". Lost 29 lbs and felt more balanced than I had in years. Strange how this isn't talked about more.
wow
I used to think my food choices only affected my weight 🥲 turns out there was way more going on. I felt stuck for years and wasted so much money trying random solutions. Then a friend told me about Eat.Like.a.Woman.Protocol -"Loren.Gren". Ended up losing 31 lbs and feeling like a different person. Feels like secret information.
ok
great
Damn, I forgot to get baobab from the grocery store. And I walked right past the baobab aisle, too.
thank you the wonderful info
Good video. This spring I reversed a stubborn 4-year depression using exercise and better food choices.
Worked much better than CBT, which was just a band-aid.
“Mothers” who have had bad diets and passed that onto children. What a shame this important information is littered with Maternal attribution bias
Why is he sitting on a paper roll
Heard Rogan n said hold his beer carnivore isn't good lol
It’s incredible how much our gut health dictates our mental and physical well-being. A must-watch for everyone!
