Quick look: Families may be asked to voluntarily provide health insurance information to help schools sustain mental health and behavioral health services. There is no cost to families, and participation does not affect insurance benefits or premiums.

Did you know that schools can use existing insurance coverage to help support counseling and other mental health services provided to students?

Through California’s Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative, or CYBHI, schools may ask families to voluntarily provide health insurance information so districts can seek reimbursement for eligible services. Families are not charged, there are no copays, and participation does not affect insurance benefits or premiums.

The additional funding helps schools sustain and strengthen services that support student well-being and academic success, according to Mayu Iwatani, senior administrator of Mental Health and Wellness at OCDE.

“Implementing the CYBHI Fee Schedule is truly a team effort, and Orange County has shown what’s possible when partners come together with a shared commitment to our students,” Iwatani said.
