Rochester, N.Y. — A new program that allows peers to respond to help people dealing with a mental health crisis is up and running in Monroe County after a launch event was held Monday.
HOPE First Rochester offers a compassionate and community-based alternative for those in need of assistance in the 19th Ward and Genesee-Jefferson neighborhoods (14611, 14619 and 14608 zip codes).
The trained peer responders will offer trauma-informed support without involving police.
“What we know with certainty is that when someone is in crisis, what they need is a human response,” said program director Halima Aweis. “They need someone who has been there, someone who understands. Someone who will meet them with dignity, not force.”
The program was created by the Rochester Community Advisory Board of the Daniel’s Law Coalition in light of the death of Daniel Prude in 2020. It’s funded in part by a $6 million grant in the New York state budget.
