Nightlights and depression? Sleep disruptions may be adding to mental health struggles

A growing number of Americans say they suffer from depression. A report came out on Wednesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found one in eight people ages 12 and older have been depressed in recent years. The report says the prevalence of depression has nearly doubled since 2015. It’s more likely to affect women than men — younger people than older people — and the prevalence tends to decrease with greater wealth. The CDC estimates only about 40% of adults and adolescents with depression have gotten counseling or therapy for it. Sleep problems can play a role in depression. But parents may be surprised to learn a safety device — could actually be disrupting their child’s sleep.
