  1. (Sorry I’m really late) I went to a physc ward and I grow hair super fast and am very self conscious of it and 1 of my nurses said I could shave my arms and legs only if she’s watching and then I give it back to her after. I’m so grateful for you Nurse Hannah ❤ (she also brought me cupcakes on my first night to help me feel more comfortable)

  2. This psych ward is nicer than some of my experiences. Coloring books would have been nice. Diversions were truly absent. The only thing I got was, sadly, a barren room and drugs and a few groups if I was lucky. Once in a while, there was Security who beat a patient. That was very scary, honestly. Some hospitals were treating people who were on prison ankle bracelets. In that case, I truly understand why a more reasonable patient may stress out.

  3. All my friends went to a psych ward and i was the only friend in the group didnt go and they didnt want me to go and they didn't want me to experience it until one day I got force there by a cop and now i can relate to them and know how it feel being there

  4. Many behavioral health PTs Do have friends. Low blow buddy. I donate items to our free county run detox/ mental health facility. You can look up your local one as most areas have one. It may be listed as county behavioral health too. They take specific donations that are always needed. Call and find out what is allowed first. I was upset when my friend was inpatient there and I brought her some things she asked for and found out just how little they are given in there. It is a great facility but does the best they can with very little. If you find out what is allowed to donate hit up your dollar store and make someone's day a little brighter. They also always need clothes, used are fine. The pts may only have the outfit they had on when admitted , and that may not be appropriate. They may be staying a long time with nobody they can get help from. And YES mental health pts often do have friends! The public facilities often house the homeless and they may Not have anyone. It's very sad and I know they would appreciate a little gift. They do without items in there I would consider necessity.😢 Sorry this is so long but I feel very strongly this is a good way to help thoes trying to improve their situation in a healthy manner.

  5. Based on the comments I'm guessing a lot of these are American psych ward experiences. I've been twice in Canada and we did have access to razors, I mean you couldn't keep them with you or anything but if you went to the office and asked for one they've give you one to shower (depending on how suicidal you were they might limit it). The heavy chair thing never made sense to me until I checked myself in the first time and then I realized that a lot of the people in there were A) old or B) some sort of drug addict and then it made more sense but as a 6'2" roughly 300 lbs mid 20s male if I wanted to launch that chair the weight wasn't going to stop me but I wasn't the type to lash out at others just silently self destruct. The metal plates behind rails solves 2 problems which is the whole tying things problem but it also prevents a resident who might be going through some shit from preventing them from grabbing onto it to avoid being restrained or being able to grab on to it and pull it off the wall. We had blinds that just lid open and closed so no knobs or strings. As far as I noticed we all had electricity in our outlets but there was a rule that you couldn't have a cellphone, tablet, or laptop so there wasn't much need and this rule was for privacy reasons, it can be a very personal experience going through the psyche ward last thing you'd want is someone taking a picture of you and posting it on facebook so everyone in town knows you're going through some shit.. Those colouring books though I guess those are universal cause they had a ton of them there.

  6. The first time I ever went to a psych ward, they have these super heavy chairs, and I picked it up to see if I could and I could. It was super easy and I was super weak and some of these people went to the gym like four days a week and if I could pick it up and throw it, they certainly could and that would hurt like hell. at the second, though they have these like super weak chairs that were like made out of the cheapest plastic ever which wouldn’t hurt if they were thrown so yeah

  7. I'll say it once again, this video just shows me a massive disconnect between the patient and the doctor.

The doctor sees all the safety, yet the doctor doesn't think about how all of this can make said mentally ill person feel even more unstable, due to it feeling like a literal prison.

The patient ultimately leaves feeling like there is no help left for them. Now they don't even feel like they can talk openly about their mental state without being literally locked away against their will. The patient then bottles up their mental, which naturally only causes them to get to a worst state than when they started.

It's of course important to make sure patients are safe, but when you literally force them into care, it is a prison, and it is counter-productive.

  8. The psych wards I was in had no blinds and no motivational quotes. I do remember the heavy chairs though. The problem is that some patients are strong enough to pick them up. One person suggested that rather than being made super heavy, they should be made super light.

Edit: I'm seeing a lot of people talking about how horrible the staff are. I was lucky enough to be in some very good psych wards, but some of the staff were really just awful. I encountered a lot of situations where staff would deliberately make things ridiculously difficult for me, then say that the fact that I was unable to accomplish certain tasks meant that I needed to be in there.

  9. I went to a psych ward where all the chair were filled with sand and weighed 40 lbs so we joked “it’s all fun and games til someone’s strong enough to throw that and does some real damage”

  10. Thankfully i was in a type of psychiatric hospital where people aren't that dangerous to themselves or others (i was there just because they can find and try good meds for me more quickly. I wasn't that depressed anymore but still too tired and numb to function properly) so we could have some things like cables to charge our smartphones in our rooms. I still wasn't feeling good there because being outside my home with strangers is really bad for me but some patients were saying they feel like on vacations and it was helping them more
