How Do I Set Healthy Boundaries With a Loved One Who is Using Substances?
i’m Carla from Partnership and Addiction responding to common questions we hear from parents setting boundaries can feel overwhelming especially when it’s with your loved one who is using substances it’s not about control it’s about protecting your relationship and your own well-being so what do healthy boundaries look like emotionally you can care for your child without taking on all their stress if things get heated it’s okay to say “I love you and I don’t want to continue talking while we’re both upset let’s talk later.” Financially supporting them doesn’t have to mean enabling you can help them with groceries or school expenses and say no to things that don’t align with your values or could endanger them and if they’re living at home it’s okay to have clear expectations like “You may not use substances inside the home.” or if you’re coming home late text me to let me know you’re safe the goal isn’t to control your child it’s to protect your peace while staying connected boundaries show love even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment no two families are the same reach out to our helpline for personalized support
