How did you know what kind of nurse you wanted to be?! New podcast episode on Spotify and Apple now 🙂
I was in a psych ward 2x in between those two times I was 12 to 13 let me tell you some of the nurses there are the nicest people but some of the patients are just a little nerve-wracking they sometimes trigger you and stuff like that! sometimes at night time we'd have this one girl that have episodes of hallucinations and she was always screaming during these hallucinations so almost everyone in this ward got triggered because of the loud noise of someone screaming and it was chaos people are running around some people were crying some people are getting tic attacks it was a bit of chaos in my stay but hey I made it out okay!~
Holy hell, I’ve 24 years done as a psych nurse 🫣
A psych nurse lady you are my hero
Basically, I grew up in a California State Mental Hospital. Both my parents worked there. My Dad for, like 30+ years, and my Mom close to 25. Several relatives also worked there. Then, my Husband also made it his career. While not RNs, their license was pretty much equal, with a stronger backing in Psych. As I have their stories, as well as my own, I know a lot. Just for jollies, here's a few. There was an actual Exorcism performed once, worked too. There was a Werewolf, Psych diagnosis of Lycanthropy Delusion, who wandered the Campus on full moon nights. He was often shadowed by a "Luna-tic" who would laugh maniacally at the moon. I met a "Rocket Scientist" who, (son of a gun!) WAS! Serial Killer, Mom Murderer, and " Little Man from Outer Space". Lobotomys were performed for a very brief time, the doctor who invented it demonstrated it, and outright killed the patient during the procedure. No others were done at that facility! Straight Jackets, padded cells, all the most modern treatments. Also, they were the testing site for the first Psychotropic drugs.
I LOVED working as a Nurse in Psych. I never , ever, had a boring dull day! Something different everyday! Met a lot of beautiful people afflicted by mental illness and learned it can happen to anyone! I had patients who were Mom’s and Dad’s, a Nurse, a man who trained to be on the USA Diving team, a scientist, farmers, etc people from every walk of life. Such a wonderful profession!😊
Lmao. My gf is a nurse and came our of rotations saying she wants to ve med surg.
Ended up going med tele due to hospital shift availability, though.
I’m not looking forward to clinical rotations in med surg or the geriatric unit 🫣
Now she confirmed what to avoid once i finish nursing school 😅😂
My best friend growing up, her dad worked at Damascus hospital in Portland, Oregon. After 25-30 into it, he lost his mind completely 😮😢😮
I’ve met Bob Marley he was a white young woman, another patient informed me I had to let her out because she was Princess Diana ( who had died by this time) and her limo was waiting outside, I’ve also met lots of Jesus’s, the CEO of my hospital has had a few stays on the ward and looked nothing like he really does … oh and the President (except I live in Canada and we have a Prime Minister) … so basically it’s never boring on the mental health unit.
Actually, a nurse at the pysch hospital I was in was one of the reasons why I am still here.
I did 7 years… it drove me crazy 😂. But seriously, I got tired of the patients gaming the system. They would have to visit their PO but they knew they would test dirty so they would clam SI and get a 5150 (72 hour hold) to get medications that would also make them test dirty but the PO couldn’t use it against them and send them back to jail.
When I was in for an attempt at offing myself I put together a puzzle with a little girl who thought she was possessed, someone who thought he was Jesus, and a severely schizophrenic lady from Ukraine who saw ghosts and could read everyone’s “aura.” Was a hell of a time. Weirdly Jesus was pretty damn chill
I was a psych nurse for 28 of my 40 years as a nurse. I liked it way better than any other nursing job. I did home visits for the mentally ill in rural Arkansas. What a wild trip that was.
I'm currently on a psychiatry rotation and… yeah, had some similar experiences (or at least heard such anecdotes).
Wait she met a man who was African American…but identified as white… He was in the psych ward but Rachel Dol….. Ok let me shut up
I could never do what she does. My hats off to you ma'am ❤️
I met Jesus working on a psych unit also ❤
I am therapeutic recreation director for a psych facility 16 yrs and there are many ups and downs but they are the best group of people. Despite their diagnosis they are still individuals and human ❤
I be psych nurse soon. Huge respect to you
Absolutely agree
I've been in a psych ward and i remember one person was claiming he was an angel and i went along with it. He was a nice guy and pretty cool
I remember that, psych was not for me… that’s for an 😇 Angel with a lot of patience. I chose CVICU❤
That’s the only type of nurse that should specialize in psych ♥️
I worked inpatient psych for 15 years and met 2 Jesus on the same unit. Mostly they avoided one another. I did enjoy the native American Elvis.
I’ve had such bad experiences with psych ward nurses and techs. I hope she was good to her patients, because people like me dont deserve to be treated like trash for no reason
I miss working in psych. I started there as a new grad.
The stuff patients say you can’t make up. There was a patient that told me to watch out for Mr. Potato Head because he wanted to steal my hair.
Hope to go back one day
However, I do believe the ones that deserve ALL the credit are the techs. They are the ones that do all the work. I learned more about how to interact with patients from the techs.
I work inpatient psych. My last job was geriatric/forensic inpatient psych. I love it, but it most definitely is not for everyone.
Wait. . .a black guy who thought he was white was in the psych ward? Either this was in about 1887 or that was just disrespectful, illegal, & unwoke! 😲
I want to be a doctor but I think I am not going to make it as a doctor
African american… 🤔
Do we think that all africans are black?
How funny… I met a Tupac in the psych ward too! 🤔🥴
Psych is so exciting ! I love the drama
Been a psych nurse for 13 years and would not have it any other way. I took thought I wanted to be a L&D nurse until I realized not all babies are born to happy, healthy and nurturing families. It would have been a fast track to burnout for me. Oh but psych was a whole different playground with so much to absorb. It's never a dull moment but you really do get to see people make full recoveries and it's rewarding to have been a part of that.
But who are you to identify him? Have you seen imitation of life? Some times the psych staff are the real undiscovered psych patients.😂😂😂😂😂
have you seen how much they get paid thats why they become psychiatric nurses
It's been 14 for me. I teach all tje CPI crisis intervention classes at my hospital now.
I’ve been a psych nurse for 31 years
I love psych. I have a ton of cool stories in this job. I also love seeing psychotic patients become more clear and stable as they get better. Really made me feel for mental health in different ways. It’s very eye opening to work here. I’ll never go back to critical care again.
Most nursing students gravitate towards L&D or psych
