Introduction to the Counselling and Mental Health Service

at durham university we have lots of support available for students however sometimes you may need more specialist support and that’s what our service is for if you experience difficulty with your mental health or emotional well-being you can contact us from wherever you are in the world we’re based within the palatine center for face-to-face sessions but also offer online sessions for flexibility mental health difficulties are normal and one in four people report these experiences our service sees around 10 percent of durham students every year they don’t have to be a barrier to succeeding at university and support is available either within the university or in the local national health service we’re not a crisis or emergency service that is provided by the national health service but we do offer a range of support if you feel you need specialist support email the counseling and mental health service to self-refer our friendly admin team will then send you a link to a self-referral form and assessment form for you to complete once your forms are completed we will contact you to let you know the next step that we feel will benefit you the most we encourage all students to explore ways to work towards their own mental and emotional health and well-being which is why we offer a range of self-help resources available to all students via the counselling and mental health service website all students also have access to the silver cloud well-being programs silver cloud is an online self-help program using cognitive behavioral therapy cbt based techniques if you feel you need further guidance on managing your well-being or self-help resources our psychological wellbeing team are here to help the psychological wellbeing team offer brief sessions such as a 15-minute guidance session or if you need to discuss your issues further a 30-minute session these sessions are to help you identify which support could be helpful the psychological wellbeing team offers psycho-educational workshops and can support you to work through the mental health modules on silver cloud however if you feel that you need to reflect on and explore your problems further counselling may be more suitable it can help when you have an idea of what you would like to change in your life and it can also help you to gain clarity when you don’t our team of qualified accredited counsellors and counsellors in training can offer students up to six sessions per academic year free of charge throughout the year counselling can help you manage personal issues that may make it difficult to engage with your studies and wider university life we offer an evening service during term time and a rolling program of support groups all the information given in the counseling and psychological wellbeing sessions is confidential unless we have concerns that you or someone else is at risk you may come to durham with a mental health history or diagnosis and need further advice which is why we have a team of mental health advisors mental health advisors a mental health professionals with a background in the national health service and social care and we work with students who come to durham with complex enduring and sometimes risky mental health difficulties or develop them while they’re studying university services don’t provide mental health treatment that belongs to the local national health service but we can advise students with both diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health difficulties on how to get the right help we have good links with local mental health services and often arrange university support meetings to talk through situations where a student is struggling and make sure all support is in place so if you’d like to access support from the counselling and mental health service please contact us via email or check out our website for further information
