FITCHBURG — Empower Children for Success has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office Environmental Justice Fund.

Empower representatives said this marks a significant investment in North Central Massachusetts and a critical step toward addressing the environmental and emotional challenges affecting children in some of the commonwealth’s most vulnerable communities. The award, announced by Andrea Joy Campbell, will support the expansion of ECFS’s Calming Kit Project, an innovative initiative designed to provide what leaders describe as “psychological first aid” for children ages 0–12.

Across the region, families are currently facing wait times of up to 20 to 26 weeks for pediatric mental health services, said Empower representatives. In response, ECFS is taking a proactive approach by delivering immediate support directly into homes, classrooms and community settings.

Through this initiative, 250 therapeutic calming kits will be distributed within designated “environmental justice census blocks.”

These kits include evidence-based sensory tools, visual supports, and guided strategies that help children regulate their nervous systems in real time.

According to Marites MacLean, president of ECFS, “This is about more than just a kit; it is about providing psychological first aid to families who have been historically overlooked. By stabilizing children in their own environments, we are preventing behavioral crises that can escalate into emergency room visits or unnecessary law enforcement involvement.”

The Calming Kit Project reflects a shift from reactive responses to preventative, trauma-informed care. Educators and caregivers report noticeable improvements in children’s ability to self-regulate, along with reduced behavioral escalations and stronger engagement in learning environments, according to Empower representatives. By equipping children with foundational emotional skills early in life, the program supports long-term academic success, resilience and healthier social development.

The broader impact of the project extends well beyond individual children and families. By reducing the frequency and intensity of emotional crises, the initiative helps alleviate pressure on the region’s pediatric behavioral health system while also supporting first responders with more compassionate, “soft-intervention” approaches through partnerships such as the Handle With Care Collaborative.

In addition, the project advances economic and social equity by directing critical resources into communities disproportionately affected by environmental stressors, ensuring that access to emotional support is not determined by zip code. Through collaboration with organizations such as LUK, Inc., ECFS is also developing digital training modules for caregivers and educators, creating a scalable model that extends the project’s impact far beyond the distribution of physical kits.

The initiative has been recognized at the state level for its innovation and community impact. In announcing the award, Attorney General Andrea Campbell emphasized the importance of investing in communities historically affected by environmental harm, stating, “Every neighborhood deserves clean air, safe water and a healthy environment. These funds and your commitment will help repair historic harms and ensure that resources reach the communities who need them most.”

ECFS continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to accountability by tracking distribution metrics within environmental justice census blocks and gathering feedback from caregivers and community partners to measure outcomes and refine the program.

As momentum builds, the Calming Kit Project is emerging as a scalable, community-centered solution with the potential to expand into additional school districts, childcare programs and neighborhoods across Worcester County and the North Quabbin region. By addressing children’s emotional well-being, supporting caregivers and strengthening local systems, ECFS said they are helping to build healthier, more resilient communities, one child, one family and one neighborhood at a time.
