AURORA, Colo — New details released Tuesday shed light on the condition of an Aurora police officer who was stabbed in the head while responding to a mental health crisis call earlier this month.

Aurora Police identified the officer as Mark Moore and said he is now in a rehabilitation facility recovering from what they described as severe injuries.

The April 9 incident unfolded at a home on East Stanford Circle, where officers — along with members of the department’s Crisis Response Team — responded to reports of a man threatening to harm himself and others.

According to police, officers initially established communication with 23-year-old Amare Garlington. At some point, Garlington stopped responding, then ran outside and attacked Moore and his K9 with a butcher knife.

Police said Moore was being stabbed when he fired his weapon, killing Garlington.

Investigators have not yet been able to interview Moore due to the extent of his injuries.

The K9 involved in the incident, which police said had recently survived cancer, is expected to recover.
