Members of Starke County’s 911 Dispatch team took part in some specialized training today aimed at supporting mental health for first responders.

According to an announcement from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office, 911 Director Becca Hardel, and dispatchers Meagan Morrin and Kaylah Ferrell, attended the Level Up 911 Mental Health Course at the MAAC Center.

The training was hosted by the Indiana Statewide 911 Board and INDIGITAL, and focused on recognizing mental health challenges that emergency dispatchers often face.

The course covered topics including PTSD, burnout, and suicide awareness, and also encouraged open conversations about stresses associated with working in emergency services.

The training and the Starke County Sheriff’s Office announcement highlights a reality that many may not realize, stating: “While the average person may experience one to two critical incidents in a lifetime, first responders can face hundreds. Dispatchers, in particular, often carry a unique burden hearing the fear, the chaos, and the cries for help without always receiving closure.”

The goal of the course is to break the stigma around mental health and to ensure that those who help others in crisis are also supported.

The announcement also thanked Level Up 911 and the Indiana Statewide 911 Board for providing the training.
