Marielle Santos McLeod, Director of Strategic Programs and Partnerships at Cancer Hope Network and Patient Research Advocate at the SWOG Cancer Research Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’m honored to have participated in the Advocate Poster Session through the American Association for Cancer Research Scientist-Survivor Program, highlighting the power of patient-centered support in cancer care.

Our poster explored how one-to-one peer mentorship improves mental health outcomes for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients and caregivers. By matching individuals with trained mentors who understand shared life-stage challenges—like parenting, fertility, careers, and relationships—we see meaningful impact.

Among 119 AYA participants matched through Cancer Hope Network, followed over 18 months:

77% reported decreased distress on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) scale
Average distress scores dropped from 8 to 5
Participants shared improved outlook, greater hope, and reduced isolation

One young mother with metastatic cancer shared how her mentor gave her renewed hope and connection during an incredibly difficult time—reminding us that shared experience is powerful medicine.

These findings reinforce that accessible, empathetic peer support can truly transform the cancer experience.”
