Who are the Battling Mind Striders?
BMS is an organization whose purpose is to advocate, support, and help individuals with mental illnesses in our community. We assist in giving people with mental illnesses the opportunity to know that our group is a safe place for people to come together. One way this happens is to meet on Saturdays (weather permitting) at 10a.m. at the Catholic Charities building (67 East Pearl St) in Wellsville, NY.

Our objective is to walk to improve our mental health as well as sharing coping mechanisms. Another thing we do is to create awareness of the struggles that people with mental illness go through whether or not someone has a diagnosis. We do some fundraisers as well.
Last year BMS hosted our 1st Schizophrenia Awareness Month… We had a great turnout and it allowed for each individual to come to spread awareness for schizophrenia. Below is a picture from our awareness walk. Thank you to those who attended last year’s events!

BMS is hosting our 2nd Annual Schizophrenia Awareness Month in May. Each event will focus on creating awareness and allowing all who attend an opportunity to learn about schizophrenia and mental health. The first event will be an awareness walk in Wellsville. The second event will be an information booth where people can learn about schizophrenia and what type of services are available. The third event will be a movie titled “Canvas” (2006 movie). This movie is based on a true story about a woman and her family and her struggles with schizophrenia. The fourth event is a volunteer day at Hart Comfort House of Allegany County. The last event for the month will be a meditation and prayer which Br. Kevin Kriso, OFM
For each event that people attend they can enter in a raffle for some local gift certificates.
Everyone is welcome to come to these events and no one will be turned away as our goal for BMS is to advocate and be a beacon of hope for those who live with schizophrenia.
Never give up!
