First responders see the worst of the worst, resulting in higher rates of mental health crises. A Boca Raton brewery is doing its part to support the people who support us.

Barrel of Monks Brewing will be releasing the Breaking the Silence Pale Ale, with proceeds benefitting Survive First. The brewery is celebrating its release in May, describing the ale as a mix of “bright citrus, grapefruit, and pine-forward hop character with subtle tropical notes.”

Brewed in collaboration with Dirty Oar Beer Company and Savage Lyfe Brewin, 10 percent of all launch event sales, $2 from every pint, and $3 from every six pack will be donated to Survive First, a Florida nonprofit that works to reduce suicides in first responders and support their mental health.

“At its core, this release is about community,” Kevin Abbott, director of operations at Barrel of Monks Brewing, said in a press release. “We believe craft beer has the power to bring people together, and when it does, it can also create meaningful change.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, up to 32 percent of first responders—such as police officers, firefighters, and paramedics—develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, compared to just 7 to 12 percent of the average American adult.

The public is welcome to join Barrel of Monks Brewing for its release of Breaking the Silence Pale Ale on May 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the brewery, 1141 S. Rogers Circle #5 in Boca Raton. barrelofmonks.com
