San Antonio, Texas — SAN ANTONIO – Laurel Ridge Treatment Center is now notifying employees of a mass layoff impacting about 648 workers at its San Antonio facility.

The WARN notice, dated April 27, states that the layoffs are expected to be permanent and will take effect on June 26.

According to the Department of Labor the “Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) protects workers, their families, and communities by requiring employers with 100 or more employees (generally not counting those who have worked less than six months in the last 12 months and those who work an average of less than 20 hours a week) to provide at least 60 calendar days advance written notice of a plant closing and mass layoff affecting 50 or more employees at a single site of employment. “

In a letter obtained by Fox SA, it says, “the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patients admitted before April 30 may continue to receive covered care for up to 30 days after the termination date, but no federal payments will be made for patients admitted on or after April 30.”

This comes after FOX SA reported last week that the federal government moved to terminate Medicare and Medicaid funding for Laurel Ridge, where three patients died in 2025.

According to federal records, patients were also placed in “immediate jeopardy” amid a string of noncompliance with safety regulations.

A federal notice sent April 15 warns the psychiatric hospital it will be dropped from the program at the end of the month, effective April 30, according to Thomas Vazquez, assistant press officer for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

This will put San Antonio in a bigger crunch for Mental Health beds for the entire Metro area. Fox SA has reported in the past about the shortage of beds for those with mental health and addiction problems.

Laurel Ridge’s website says it has 330 behavioral beds and they provide “specialized, comprehensive, acute care and residential treatment for children, adolescents, and adults on a 29-acre campus.”

We have called Laurel Ridge numerous times this evening, and the operator simply hangs up on us.
