CUERO, Texas — Students and staff in Cuero Independent School District gathered Thursday to promote mental health awareness ahead of Mental Health Awareness Month, which begins May 1.

The district hosted a mental health walk at the Cuero ISD track, giving students an opportunity to connect with local organizations and learn more about mental wellness and available support services.

Representatives from Mid-Coast Family Services, Cuero Regional Hospital and other organizations attended the event, providing information and free counseling resources for students and families.

Teachers and staff said mental health support is especially important for students who may feel overwhelmed during the school year.

“We want to promote mental health awareness to break the stigma so the students, as well as the families, can come to us as a safe place for them to go,” Lacy Timpone, a license professional council, said. “If you don’t have resources outside of the school and can’t pay, maybe they can’t travel, we have them here at the school that are free to them.”

District leaders said they hope events like the walk encourage students to speak openly about mental health and seek help when needed.
