May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma and expand support for people living with mental health conditions.
Among them are eating disorders, which affect an estimated 31 million Americans at some point in their lives, according to the National Eating Disorders Association.
There are several types of eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.
A new survey from the organization highlights the role social media can play, with 82% of respondents saying it has triggered disordered eating thoughts or behaviors. Another 58% said it is difficult to avoid body-focused content, even when trying. The survey also found that the quality of content has a greater impact than the amount of time spent online.
Jessica Scheer, CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association, joined Rocco Vertuccio to discuss the findings and ways to address these challenges.
