HEALTH MINUTE (CNN) – Menopause is finally getting the attention it deserves after long being considered a taboo subject. More women are becoming aware of the stage of life and its effect on their bodies.

Dr. Lulu Zhao with Cleveland Clinic said physical symptoms may include hot flashes and night sweats, problems with sleep, inability to lose weight, joint aches and hair and skin changes. It can also cause significant shifts in hormones and impact mental health.

“During this time, these unstable sex hormones really wreak havoc on the brain,” said Zhao.

Experts share that the hormone shifts can lead to irritability, being distracted and even clinical depression and anxiety. Zhao reminded patients that this time in their life is a good reminder to step back and prioritize their energy and self care.

She shared that coping with menopausal mood symptoms begins with self-care, eat a balanced diet, getting good sleep, and exercise. She also advised staying engaged in activities patients find rewarding and enjoyable.

“Even if you don’t really feel like doing them, by the time you’re done doing them, your mood is lifted,” said Zhao.
