CLOQUET — Members Cooperative Credit Union, which has branch locations in Cloquet, Duluth and throughout the Northland, is giving $1 million to community partners to expand access to mental health support.

The

Project Horizon

initiative was launched in May in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month and focuses on “strengthening communities through human connection, partnerships, programs, volunteer efforts and sustained investment,” according to a news release from Members, and

Brightwater Health, the largest community mental health provider in Northern Minnesota, received $100,000 from the credit union in the first Project Horizon distribution.

Formerly known as Human Development Center,

Brightwater

is a certified community behavioral health clinic that delivers coordinated care for people of all ages in Carlton, Lake, St. Louis and Cook counties in Minnesota, and Douglas County in Wisconsin.

“Members’ commitment through Project Horizon will change the landscape of the Northland’s mental health by supporting organizations like ours,” Benjamin Hatfield, chief executive officer of Brightwater Health, said in the release. “We simply couldn’t provide care to all without incredible partners like Members.”

Brightwater offers 28 programs within its mental health and recovery services, including an urgent care behavioral health clinic, the Yellow Leaf Support Center, an early childhood and perinatal program, child and family services, adult outpatient therapy, recovery services, psychiatry and community support.

“Our commitment to mental wellbeing and partnership with trusted organizations like Brightwater Health allows us to help expand access to meaningful mental health support and better serve the whole person, which impacts our greater communities,” Simone Suri, Members chief administrative officer and general counsel, said in the release.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
