WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of people are putting their best foot forward this Sunday for Mental Health Awareness Month. They laced up their sneakers and walked around Kirby Park.
Peer Help United Network hosted the fundraiser and awareness event.
Vendors were on hand with information to help those in the struggle and their loved ones receive support and resources.
The walk had not been held in a few years, but now that it’s back, organizers hope it provides some key takeaways.
“Just understanding that mental illness affects so many people, about 20 percent of our population, and it’s by no fault of anyone, and that support is here,” Luzerne/Wyoming County Mental Health & Developmental Services Administrator Tara Fox said.
“Just a great day to celebrate recovery, shared life experience, and bring awareness to something that’s so important,” Families United Network CEO Ron Simon explained.
Sunday’s walk also highlighted the relaunch of luzerne and Wyoming counties’ National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter after a hiatus.
