Can Magic Mushrooms Unlock Depression? | Rosalind Watts | TEDxOxford

A clinical psychologist from Imperial College describes how Magic Mushrooms (Psilocybin), when used in a therapeutic setting, have been found to be a very effective treatment for depression. In this talk she draws on her experiences as working as a therapist on the groundbreaking Psilocybin for Depression study, and introduces us to some of the patients and their stories of transformation.

Dr Rosalind Watts completed her clinical psychology training at University College London. After six years of practicing psychotherapy in the NHS, she joined a clinical trial at Imperial College, investigating psilocybin (magic mushrooms) as a treatment for depression. Her research explores patients’ positive views of this intriguing therapy.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

  1. Anyone reading this right now, please know you're not alone since starting my journey into mycology. It's opened up doors I never knew existed & and every day is such a wonderful & magical experience,I went from laying in bed 24/7 not eating, communicating with anyone to writing music, exploring nature,Journaling, helping others learn about mycology, dog training, telling others about my story, just living my life for the 1st time since a child!

  2. I would say the mushroom not only shows you the key to unlock depression it also gives you the ability to use the key.

  3. I am using antideppressant since i was 18 and i am 35 now. I wish i can reach that psylocibin therapy but anyways this video gave me hope thank you so much

  4. Man, I was skeptical at first, but psilocybin legit helped me break out of a cycle that therapy alone couldn’t touch. It’s like it showed me where the light switch was in a dark room.

  5. I’ll never forget my first time mushrooms a couple months ago and it was such a beautiful experience. It’s a game changer for severe depression and anxiety……Peace! Truly one of the most remarkable phenomenons on the planet

  6. I was always against magic shrooms as it’s been engraved as a recreational drug and therefore would of been labeled as a druggy. Boy was a I wrong, ingested a big dosage of shroom by accident and it was literally reborn out of it! I see myself with nature, it taught me years of lessons in just 2 hrs, Im much more productive, I can feel the music more and an immediate euphoric sensation rushes throughout my entire body and soul! Life changing! I’d highly recommend trying a high dose in a safe environment. Then maybe just micro dose when needed but let me tell you I don’t need as much as anti depressants. Used to take anti depressants everyday. I maybe micro dose once every 2 months now? So you tell me which is the “drug” pharmaceutical pills needed everyday or shrooms found on our planet???

  7. Psylocibin causes new neurons to grow, then unneeded ones are pruned. It heals the brain in many areas, strokes, etc. symbiotic.

  8. well if your smart and you look farther then just earthy objects then you know the only cure for depression is jesus , jesus put emotions in us for a reason he wanted us to see and go thru things in order to beleive and have faith , he didn’t just want us to come on this earth and he instantly gives us wealth and everything we want. we have to build those things so when i look at the drugs to the shrooms to the weed iont think ittle fix my problems long term it’s just there for me to use for rewards ill say

  9. People don’t need drugs. They need to wake up and face their problems head on and find Jesus. This is just an excuse for druggies to keep being who they are.

  10. Absolute magic,,i would be an advocate for psilocybin, changed my outlook and approach to life ,no pharmaceutical drug or talking touched me

  11. this was so good, thank you. i have had now 5 macrodose experiences this past year, for recovery from a life changing accident and resultant traumas including TBI. It has been remarkable, spaced !one month apart. It's not something even someone with addictive tendencies would want to do every day, and in fact has been researched as a treatment for addiction. Set and setting is key, I would not advise taking psilocybin immediately after a life changing accident, you want time to stabilize and heal a bit. But when ready, this truly is a near miraculous help for trauma survivors. I did not personally get much about of the microdose, just the macro, but to each their own.

  12. Oh my, it's astonishing how she got it all wrong, depression is not a dissease, or an illnes, it's just a natural response to an unatural way of living, and psylocibin does not fix that, it's just hiding it, it's still an artificial mechanism that disconects your awarness and blocks reality so you can cary on as an organism, it's not a fix, not by a long shot, but I agree it does make it seem more manageble, I do not condone it, but just call it for what it is, Alcohool does the same thing in a less potent manner, everyone becomes more outspocken and active after a few shots, it does come with some other side effects that allows people to put it in a different category, but fundametally it's the same thing, you are patching up the cracks, not fixing them. So weird how so called "Professioanls" "Scientists" have no clue.

  13. Me and my mate Dave are going mushroom 🍄 picking soon, we don't suffer from depression or anything, they're just good fun, let's hope we find loads 😀 we don't believe in microdosing, more like massive dosing 😂

  14. And if your ever having a bad trip, you either sit there and breathe and remind urself “I’m just on mushrooms I will be ok and this will pass” or ask the mushrooms “take a easy on me a bit” you will start to calm down and have a better experience. Or if nothing is working you just take a Xanax and wait.

  15. I know that a lot of people reading the comments are looking for answers, like I was. So I'll try elaborate.
I suffer with Treatment-Resistant Depression. No feelings, no energy, constant fog around me, not feeling present, and terrible sleep – for just over 3 years now. Ive tried everything – antidepressants, ketamine, therapy, different psychiastrists, and literally everything under the sun.

I tried my first dosage of shrooms 2 months ago, and its changed everything. For the first time, i have hope. Firstly, don't think of it as something that will instantly take your depression away, but rather that can assist you in getting rid of the depression over time. It gives you the keys to get rid of it.

For the first time in 3 years, i felt an emotion. I felt peace. I felt hope. I felt magic. To try and explain the experience is futile, you just need to go through it. Its an adventure that you take yourself on, where your inner self tells you what you need to hear. Shows you what you need to see. Helps you where you need to be helped. Theres a lot of work that has to go into it before and after, but it tells you how to change your life in order to get to where you need to be, whether thats for curing depression or anything else. Its a profound experience, and comparable to nothing. Ive only touched the surface, and for my case my inner self told me that it will take years of monthly doses to cure. But im okay with that. Its been 3 years already, and after spending thousands and thousands of dollars, I found something that is better than any therapist out there. Something that allows you to give yourself the answers. The only thing that has given me any sort of hope.

Besides my depression, its also given me so much insight to my life that I didnt even know I needed.

If you have depression and nothing is helping, i plead with you, find an integrative psychiatrist or someone in your country who can guide you through this, because it will really change your life.

And lastly, dont be scared. You can't die taking mushrooms. Your life will only get better.

Big love to you all. We got this <3

  16. Why in the end did she have to say "NO MUSHROOMS DOESN'T WORK" wtf? I wanted to send this to my dad only to have the end say.. it doesn't work coz the patient is the one or whatever 😕 😒 i can't convince my family about this with … "no mushrooms doesn't work at the end" 😢

  17. I'm sure lots of caring frontline staff in the NHS would love magic mushrooms to be made available. Unfortunately, the decision makers are often enticed by big pharma to use existing medication. The new needs to return to being a Health service rather than a Drugs service

  18. I took shrooms to help find myself. I did. Every trip something kept saying time and pointing at me. I would eventually focus how time affected everything about me. I seen in 3rd person stress of being lost. Head issues. I work on it daily and I feel great. The path so clear.

  19. This is a very interesting and important subject.. This fungus that has a strange effect is most likely, good for your mental health…
