Health professionals say while many mothers experience exhaustion, stress, and emotional changes after childbirth, postpartum mental health conditions can become severe if left untreated.
Conditions such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and other maternal mental health disorders can affect mothers of all ages and backgrounds.
Kristen Smith says the issue is more common and more dangerous than many people realize.
“It’s the largest complication in pregnancy,” Smith said. “Twenty-three percent of pregnancy-related deaths are from suicide or intentional overdose, which is a pretty alarming statistic. Only about 75% of those affected will actually get treatment for it.”
Mental health professionals encourage mothers and families to openly discuss postpartum mental health struggles and seek professional support when needed.
Experts say early intervention and strong support systems can make a major difference in recovery and overall well-being for both mothers and their families.
