PORT ARTHUR — May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated hosted their annual Mental Health Fair at Central Mall Saturday.
The Epsilon Theta Omega chapter in Port Arthur brought together half a dozen organizations focused on breaking the stigma surrounding mental health while connecting the community with valuable local resources. Health professionals talked to people one-on-one about counseling, wellness programs, crisis support, and self-care strategies available.
The chapter president, Araina Daniels, says the goal is to create safe spaces for open dialogue and ensure the public knows they are not alone. “By doing so, we’re enabling those who have issues with mental health to be able to function in a society where they may find themselves just inhibited, enables individuals to be aware of those around them, and to help them actually support individuals who are suffering crisis and get help on the front end before it becomes an even bigger issue.”
