WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, Christ Counseling Ministries is continuing efforts to connect more people across Texoma with support, resources and faith-based counseling services.

Executive Director Thad Douglass said conversations surrounding mental health have continued to evolve in recent years, with more people becoming open to therapy and emotional support.

“I think we’re seeing across, you know, our culture, our nation, there is this openness to seek mental health services. And there’s a lot of clarification. Thankfully, that’s happened to help people understand what mental health is, and then, you know, what is mental health care, and how that impacts your life?,” Douglass said.

Douglass said many people are now seeking counseling not only during times of crisis, but also to better understand themselves, strengthen relationships and improve their overall well-being.

At Christ Counseling Ministries, their approach focuses on relational therapy building trust and walking alongside people through life’s challenges.

“They’re seeing a lot of marriages that need better communication skills. It’s not so much that marriages are falling apart or are all so totally messed up that they are beyond repair, but so many people have gotten married, maybe been married 10 years, 20 years, and as life has gone year by year, you kind of lose the, you know, communication factor,” Douglass said.

Douglass said counseling can help individuals and families rebuild connections, develop healthier communication habits and navigate the pressures of daily life.

For many people, he said, faith also plays an important role in the healing process.

“The faith community coming into the conversation, and people integrating, you know, their beliefs, is huge, because that is a huge pillar of who people are. You’ve got your mental, you’ve got your physical, you’ve got your emotional, and you got your spiritual,” Douglass said.

While misunderstanding surrounding mental health has not completely disappeared, Douglass believes open conversations and personal testimonies continue to encourage more people to seek help.

“The faith community coming into the conversation, and people integrating, you know, their beliefs, is huge, because that is a huge pillar of who people are. You’ve got your mental, you’ve got your physical, you’ve got your emotional, and you got your spiritual,” Douglass said.

Douglass adds whether someone seeks help through Christ Counseling Ministries or another counseling service in Texoma, the goal is the same, helping more people find support and hope.

He added that while many people still suffer in silence out of fear, reaching out for help is often the first step in the healing journey.
