GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -Mesa County Public Health offers a program that provides help to first-time parents this Mental Health Awareness Month.
The Nurse-Family Partnership Program is a free program for first-time mothers. The program meets participants during pregnancy and stays with them until their child turns two, said Brooke Sorenson, a nurse-home visitor with the program.
Each family receives a specially trained registered nurse who visits them every couple of weeks, Sorenson said.
Nurses typically visit families in their homes, but the program offers flexibility. Visits can take place at parks or at the Mesa County Public Health Building, Sorenson said.
The program addresses mental health struggles for first-time parents through the relationship nurses create with families, Sorenson said. Nurses provide support and listen to parents during a time that can be isolating and vulnerable.
The program conducts mental health assessments throughout enrollment and helps parents reach their goals, Sorenson said.
More than 200 families are enrolled at any given time. The program conducted about 3,000 in-person visits last year, Sorenson said.
Eligibility is based solely on the mother’s income. Families can find more information here or call 970-254-4100.
