What if part of you is afraid to get better? It sounds irrational, but resistance to healing is one of the most common things I see in people struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health conditions.

In this video, I explain why improvement can feel terrifying, why getting better often changes relationships and identities, and why the unknown can feel scarier than staying stuck.

If you’ve ever wondered why you keep pulling back just as things start improving, this conversation might help you understand what’s really happening beneath the surface.

Next Steps:
If the usual depression advice hasn’t helped, it might be because it wasn’t built for your type of depression. I created short quiz to help you identify your pattern and what to do about it.

  1. Being depressed is sometimes easier than putting in the hard work to climb out of the hole. What's important is that you don't give up because with each push to climb out, you get stronger and are able to gain another inch on your attempts and so on. The longer you spent in the dark, the harder it is for your eyes to adjust to the light.

  2. One of my key coping strategies, something I have only learned through trial and error, is to be kinder to myself – especially when things seem hopeless or I feel like crap. Thank you for these informative videos.

  3. The Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb" comes to my mind when I think about myself. When I take moments to actively assess myself and situation, it's frightening. I live in a cocoon that I never intended and although I want to live normally and do normal things I used to, it scares the hell out of me and I don't even know how to go about climbing that mountain anymore. I've had an old friend reach out to me who has invited me more than once to get together, and recently it took me almost a week to respond to her email because I'm afraid to see anyone now, which feels crazy to me. Cocoons are safe, but I haven't fooled myself into believing it's not a prison. Thank you Dr. Scott for again giving me more to think about.

  4. I so agree with your first point. I always say i lost it all….and the only way is up. I can't imagine having it "all" and the only way is down. Endured too many dissapointments and it feels like I have some kind of control this way.

  5. I love this channel, watched nearly all videos and Scott is my go-to.
For some of you the channel "nononsensespirituality" by Britt Haley might be interesting and helpful too. I just discovered that channel. She gives ideas and help to climb out of the nihilism trap, for when everything seems meaningless because we all will die. She also helps with decontruction from religious Systems.
So….yeah… hope, it might be useful for somebody out there.
Greetings and all the best on your journey and dance from Germany to you all🙋‍♀️

  6. The thing that helped me walk away from the edge of abyss last time were not drugs nor therapy for that matter. It was spending 3 weeks in a tent under the canopies of a pine forest, swimming hours in still pretty cold Adriatic sea and sunbathing on it's shores, wearing only swimwear the whole daytime, then walking on the coast and exploring town's streets at night. It was the best "pill" I've ever eaten. I could literally feel my major depression episode, getting lighter and lighter each day. It's been a month since I returned home but benefits still persist. This sun-sea-forest "drug" should be prescribed to everyone who is living with a "black dog" on regular basis.

  7. I feel like I'm one of those people. When I'm okay, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I want to stop doing this but it's so hard
