The town of Poughkeepsie is looking ahead after the fire at the former Hudson River Psychiatric Center.

In a statement released on social media Saturday, the town reported that air quality in the area continues to be normal.

The fire that began Wednesday destroyed several historic buildings, but Poughkeepsie still intends to work with developers on repurposing the site.

The town said the site “can yet be revitalized in a way that honors its past while creating a walkable neighborhood with substantial new housing.”

The district said last week the cause and origin of the fire were being investigated by the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division and other agencies.

Officials remind residents that the site is private property and many hazards still exist on the premises.
