KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched a nationwide operation to crack down on illegal gambling and sports betting ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, warning that those involved as bettors, agents, promoters, or organisers will face stern action.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M Kumar said Ops Soga XI has been activated across the country to curb illegal gambling syndicates and online betting, expected to surge during the football tournament beginning on Thursday (June 11) until July 19.
“Ops Soga XI will be carried out aggressively and comprehensively involving all state contingents, with a focus on monitoring and taking action against illegal gambling and betting activities conducted both online and physically,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 10).
Comm Kumar said the operation would target online gambling syndicates, betting platforms and websites, as well as promotional activities conducted through social media accounts.
He added that enforcement efforts would also focus on illegal betting premises, individuals placing bets, betting agents, and parties found promoting or facilitating gambling activities.
To strengthen enforcement, police are working closely with several agencies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), to identify and block gambling platforms, websites and financial transactions linked to illegal syndicates.
“The public is advised not to get involved in any form of illegal gambling or betting, whether as players, bettors, agents, bookmakers or organisers, as firm action will be taken under the law,” he said.
Those caught could face action under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, Betting Act 1953, Penal Code and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Comm Kumar said the police remain committed to combating unlicensed gambling activities and would not compromise with any party involved.
He also urged the public to continue providing information to support efforts to eradicate illegal gambling through what he described as a “total enforcement” approach.
