TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) – The sister of Billy Gordon, the man who was killed during a mental health call by Temple police in 2024, is holding an event with the goal of increasing awareness of the resources available to the community.
The mission is to bring communities together to discuss social justice, share resources, promote civil rights, and strengthen support for one another. Not just in a time of crises but every day.
“I want to bring awareness and to bring us together so we can talk about how to prevent our family members from losing their lives,” Stacy Gordon tells KWTX.
The event will have tables set up with various community resources that focus on things like domestic violence and stop the bleed.
“We’re inviting Austin street medics, stop the bleed, so they will teach us how to deal with mental health crises at home, and a big thing is educating others that you can utilize the fire department instead of calling 911,” Gordon says.
And they are even offering classes to teach about a number of things like your civil rights. “We will have classes that will teach you your civil rights because the more I ask residents, the more I realize that people don’t know what their rights are.”
Gordon has been working on this initiative for months in honor of her brother, Billy, who died in 2024 after Temple police responded to his apartment on a mental health call.
The event will feature some keynote speakers that will talk about how to voice community concerns and fight for change.
The event is on June 26th at Temple VFW Post 1820 from 1-6 pm and it is free and open to the public.
