Penn State Shenango

Penn State hosted two mental health first aid training courses at their Commonwealth Campuses. The first class was held at the Beaver campus, the second at Shenango.

These classes were free of charge and offered to students and members of the communities. Shenango offered the course in the Chadderton Laboratory from 9am until 3:30pm.

Participants completed a hybrid in-person and online training session. This allowed them to gain an understanding of the material that would be covered in the course before completing activities in-person.

“We get to some interactive hands on activities.” Said Tammy Divens, a Teaching Professor at Penn State Shenango “I think it makes it a lot more meaningful because it is more interactive.”

This course helped the participants better understand what signs to look for and be aware of that would indicate a loved one is struggling. Additionally, they learned methods they can implement in the future when approaching someone who may be battling with their mental health.
