What Real Depression Means | Dr Raviteja
Depression is one of the most misunderstood words today. Many people casually say they are “in depression,” but in medical terms, the reality is very different.
In psychiatry, depression is not about temporary sadness or random negative thoughts. It is defined as a Major Depressive Episode when someone experiences:
• Persistent low mood or loss of interest/pleasure (anhedonia)
• Along with poor concentration, disturbed sleep, reduced appetite, fatigue, or suicidal thoughts
• Lasting for two weeks or more
Anything short of this is not depression. That’s why self-diagnosis and casual use of the word often create confusion.
If you feel these symptoms, it’s important not to ignore them. Professional help is available, and consulting a psychiatrist can make a big difference.
Dr. Raviteja Innamuri, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at Ananda Mind Care, Nizamabad, Telangana, explains in Telugu the difference between true depression and momentary sadness. His clear and simple approach helps people understand mental health better.
If you or someone you know may be struggling, please take it seriously. Depression is treatable, and reaching out to the right expert is the first step.
