ALLEN PARK, Mich. – A man shot by police in Allen Park during a mental health crisis has pleaded guilty to assault.

The shooting happened at about 5 p.m. on Jan. 4 on Southfield Road, near Roger Avenue.

Authorities said the shooting stemmed from a report that Steven Strickland, of Lincoln Park, was threatening to harm himself with a box cutter.

When officers arrived at the scene, Strickland allegedly refused officers’ commands to drop the cutter; they first fired a Taser, followed by less-lethal rounds. Police said Strickland approached the officers, one of whom fired shots, hitting Strickland in the arm.

Strickland was taken to a local hospital for his injuries.

A trial was scheduled to begin on June 22. However, Strickland pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon. The charge of assaulting a police officer was dismissed.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 15.
