Evan Dando, the frontman for the popular rock band The Lemonheads, has been hospitalized for mental health treatment after a fan claimed he sent her an unwanted video of himself masturbating.
Billboard.com reported Friday that a representative for Dando issued a statement that said the singer “has long struggled with mental health issues dating back to his childhood.”
“He’s been admitted to a local hospital where he’s receiving comprehensive help from experienced doctors and mental health professionals,” the rep said per Billboard.
The singer’s wife, Antonia Teixeira, told Billboard that she took him to a mental health treatment facility in Brazil where they live and told him that if he didn’t complete treatment she would get a divorce.
This comes after Tony Ortega, who publishes the Underground Bunker Substack, said a fan reached out to him claiming that after she congratulated Dando on releasing his new album, “Love Chant,” in October, the singer responded by sending her a video of him masturbating.
Billboard said that Teixeira, said in a phone interview that her husband had a “mental health episode” earlier this year. She told the outlet that the singer, who is 58, took a cocktail of drugs including Adderall and mushroom earlier in February and “began exchanging sexual videos with numerous women on X.” She told Billboard she believes that Dando confused the woman he sent the video to with another that he was talking to on X.
Teixeira told Billboard that Dando “betrayed me,” and that she is “very sympathetic to that lady.”
She also claimed that Dando “doesn’t remember what happened.”
Dando, a native of Essex, Massachusetts, was inducted into the Boston Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2015.
The Lemonheads were formed in 1986 and have released 11 albums since.
