SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Brentwood Hospital and the Caddo Parish School Board are providing mental health resources following a mass shooting Sunday that killed eight children.
Brentwood Hospital opened a pop-up mental health clinic to serve those affected by the shooting.
“Let’s just open up a pop-up mental health clinic,” said William Weaver, CEO of Brentwood Hospital of Shreveport. “People dealing with mental health issues have a lot of medical issues as well. Let’s just offer medical screening.”
Caddo Parish Schools is offering counseling services to students.
“Building really good relationships, offering that empathy they need, the flexibility and stability just to begin to process their grief,” said Renata D. Mahoney, Caddo Parish supervisor of counseling.
Mahoney said counselors are meeting students where they are.
“Some may just want to have time alone. They just need some routine. Some just need a hug,” Mahoney said. “We also use art therapy for the children to help get through some of their hard times.”
Pinwheels have been planted at several schools throughout the city to remember the students who died.
“Make sure we don’t interrupt their academic environment as much as possible by creating a way they can remember those students in a positive manner,” Mahoney said.
Weaver said the tragedy affected his family personally.
“My wife and I have seven grandchildren and one on the way,” Weaver said. “We were at lunch after mass on Sunday and one of my daughters said I went to school with him. It really hit home, particularly when you have a large family.”
