Universal Health Services (NYSE:UHS) reported first-quarter results for the current fiscal year that surpassed market expectations for revenue, according to the company’s latest financial release. The hospital management company posted revenue of $4.50 billion, a 9.6% increase compared to the same period last year, while non-GAAP earnings reached $5.62 per share, coming in 2.9% above analysts’ consensus estimates.
Adjusted EBITDA totaled $658.3 million, exceeding analyst projections of $628.5 million and representing a margin of 14.6%. The operating margin remained steady at 11.2% year over year. Same-store sales climbed 8.2% year on year, accelerating from the 2.4% growth recorded in the prior-year quarter.
Although the financial numbers beat Wall Street forecasts, the market reacted negatively after the report. Management attributed the quarter’s performance to robust pricing trends, an expansion of outpatient behavioral health services, and consistent cost discipline, even as volumes in both acute care and behavioral health segments softened. The chief executive cited a mild flu season and winter weather as factors reducing acute care admissions, while highlighting that investments in efficiency and technology, including the deployment of new administrative solutions, yielded benefits.
The company’s outlook is centered on its growing outpatient behavioral health strategy and the integration of its recently announced acquisition of Talkspace. Executives stated that capital allocation will balance continued share repurchases with investments in digital and outpatient capabilities, expecting the Talkspace platform to accelerate virtual care access and diversify the payer mix. The chief financial officer indicated an expected ramp in earnings as the year progresses, with volume improvement, easing wage pressures, and new facility openings supporting guidance.
Management credited the results to expanded outpatient care, disciplined expense management, and strategic technology adoption while navigating volume headwinds and changes in payer mix. The Talkspace acquisition, described as a leading virtual behavioral health provider, is intended to create a comprehensive national continuum of care, with the deal projected to be accretive to earnings within the first year and to generate significant revenue synergies by integrating Talkspace’s clinicians into outpatient and step-down programs.
Investment in outpatient clinics and adjacent services near existing hospital campuses has accelerated, aiming to capture shifting behavioral health demand as more patients opt for lower-acuity, community-based, or virtual care. Eight enterprise-level artificial intelligence solutions have been deployed across the revenue cycle, improving administrative efficiency, denial management, and revenue capture, with further use cases under development for operational and patient experience improvements.
Acute care admissions declined due to lower flu and respiratory cases and weather disruptions, but higher-acuity inpatient service lines such as cardiology and orthopedics, along with improved pricing, offset these declines. Emergency department visits and select markets, including Nevada, posted moderate growth. Wage inflation in the behavioral segment eased to about 6% year over year, down from 8% in the prior year, and turnover rates, while still elevated versus pre-pandemic levels, are improving. Contract labor costs as a percentage of revenue also declined, indicating progress in staffing stability.
