Original Story
Camillus, N.Y. – Police checking the mental health of a Camillus resident Friday morning found a house on fire, authorities said.
Police who arrived first rescued a woman from the burning house.
Officers first went to a house on Terrace Way for a mental health check on a woman there but found intense fire at the home, according to Capt. James Nightingale, a spokesperson for Camillus police.
No one was hurt in the fire, Nightingale said. The woman inside the house was taken for a medical evaluation. She was the only one inside.
Officers were first dispatched around 9:05 a.m. The fire department was called around 9:15 a.m.
The first two police officers found heavy fire coming from the front of the home, Nightingale said. They found the woman in the back of the home and brought her to safety.
By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze had become more intense and had spread from the front of the house up into the attic said Jake Carlson, chief of the Fairmount Fire Department.
Firefighters extinguished the bulk of the fire before noticing it had intensified in the attic, Carlson said. Firefighters cut holes in the roof to get access and used ladders to get on top of the one-story home.
The house suffered extensive damage and is uninhabitable, Carlson said. Two cats were also rescued.
One police officer suffered minor smoke inhalation, but was not transported to a hospital, Nightingale said.
Onondaga County fire investigators worked with Camillus police and the Fairmount Fire Department for a cause, Nightingale said.
