Health Matters: How mental health manifests physically

On this week’s Health Matters, WVUA 23 News sat down to discuss how mental health affects the physical body with Dr. Jamie Reeves, a practicing psychiatrist at University Medical Center and an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences.

“Physical health is mental health, and mental health is physical health,” Reeves said. “So many times people separate the two, but they’re closely intertwined.”

An example, Reeves said, is when you have the flu. You’re too tired to get up, and don’t want to do anything. That’s the same feeling as people who experience depression or anxiety.
