This week on “In Focus,” we explore the state of mental health in Wisconsin. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It started more than 70 years ago to help fight stigma, provide support, and educate people on mental wellness.

Eighth-grader Azalea Janis and senior Maryan Mohamed are two youth ambassadors with the 1-More Campaign. They discussed the origins of the peer-driven 1-More Campaign in and around Milwaukee, a campaign that emphasizes that one more call, text or conversation can often be enough to help many younger people overcome certain mental health challenges, at least in the short-term.

As data shows more than half of high school students have reported dealing with anxiety, with 1-in-5 previously considering suicide, the campaign highlights that a simple check-in with friends, family or classmates can end up being a life-changing or even life-saving endeavor.
