New York state officials joined Ulster County leaders in a ceremony Wednesday to highlight the official opening of the Ulster County Center for Well-Being.

Located on Broadway in Kingston, the center includes a 24/7 Crisis Support Center on the ground floor, where people of all ages can immediately access support from counselors, peer specialists and behavioral health professionals.

Operated by People USA, the center provides care for those experiencing emotional distress, psychiatric symptoms, substance use challenges and more. The facility began serving the public in January.

“What we saw in this building was the possibility of something kind of rare in public life: a lasting investment in people,” said County Legislator Peter Criswell. “Not a one-time program, not a ribbon that gets cut and a check that gets spent. A place, a permanent home for services that will touch individuals, families and children for years and years to come.”

Other floors in the building include an urgent care for behavioral health needs, a counseling center for children and the county’s Department of Mental Health offices.

Officials said it’s about making care more accessible.

“It is welcoming, it is safe, it is inclusive, it is supportive,” County Executive Jen Metzger said. “It recognizes the dignity in every individual that walks through the door and the uniqueness and complexity of each person’s needs.”
