CALEXICO — In a continued effort to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental wellness, the Imperial Regional Detention Facility (IRDF) hosted its second annual mental health fair this week, bringing together local non-profits, healthcare providers, and community leaders.

The event, held in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, transformed the facility grounds into a hub of resources aimed at fostering empathy and providing vital support networks for both residents and the broader Calexico area. Mental Health Awareness Month is observed every May to challenge the negative perceptions often associated with mental health struggles.

“Thank you to all of the local organizations that continue to support the local community and assist the facility in raising awareness for mental health,” said Jeremy Casey, Imperial’s facility administrator. “It amazes me every year to see the support and passion for the community. The facility staff really care about those in the community and in our care.”

The fair featured a diverse array of booths and representatives from across the Imperial Valley, including Sure Helpline Crisis Center, Calexico Wellness Center, the Mexican Consulate, the Imperial Behavioral Health Center, and local community colleges and businesses.

The collaborative atmosphere underscored a shared mission to provide a “safe, clean, caring, and productive environment” for those housed at the facility. Operated by Management & Training Corporation (MTC) in partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since 2014, the IRDF has sought to strengthen its ties with the surrounding community through such outreach initiatives.
