TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – It’s Mental Health Awareness Month — a reminder to slow down, take breaks, and find healthy ways to manage stress. One wellness trend getting lots of attention: cold plunges, or brief cold-water immersion.

A Stanford study suggests cold-water immersion may improve mood by boosting endorphins. Cold exposure may also increase brain chemicals linked to alertness and focus, activating the body’s natural “fight-or-flight” response — then, for some people, a calmer feeling on the other side.

At Havn Plunge and Restore in northwest Tucson, owner Paige Salzbrenner says she first tried cold plunging for a mental health reset after moving to Michigan in the middle of winter. She started with just 30 seconds and wanted to share that feeling with others.

Research shows cold-water immersion — typically around 50 to 60 degrees — can bring quick relief for some people. Some studies also suggest possible longer-term benefits like lower cortisol, improved mood regulation, and greater resilience to stress.

When you first step in, the body feels an initial shock: stress and discomfort. Supporters say that’s when the mental challenge starts — and when breathing and focus matter most. Salzbrenner says the cold can “quiet the mind,” forcing you to concentrate on your breath and body instead of racing thoughts.

Cold-water immersion is also linked to improvements in energy, focus, and mood. These immersions can take several forms, including ice baths, cold showers, open-water swimming, and cryotherapy chambers (which expose the body to extremely cold air for brief periods).

Some studies found that after trying cold-water immersion — even for about five minutes — participants reported feeling more active, alert, attentive, proud, and inspired. They also reported decreases in negative moods such as tension, anger, depression, exhaustion, and confusion. For some people, that post-plunge “reset” can also help support confidence and self-esteem over time.

Havn Plunge and Restore offers one-time and drop-in options, along with additional services including a sauna and red light therapy.
