Mental illness now leading cause of global disability | 7NEWS
Mental illness has surpassed cancer and heart disease as the leading cause of disability globally, with the number of people living with mental health disorders doubling since 1990. Research by Associate Professor Damian Santomauro from the University of Queensland reveals the increase is real rather than simply due to improved diagnosis, based on population-representative surveys using diagnostic tools. The pandemic contributed to the escalation, particularly affecting youth during critical social development periods, though steady increases have been observed over the past 15 years. Only 30 per cent of Australians with major depressive disorder access minimally adequate treatment.
