Even when someone appears to be doing well on the outside, they may be struggling with “high-functioning distress” that can be easy to miss — and experts say those overlooked warning signs can be tied to substance use.
Ari Chelli, clinical director at Desert Hope Treatment Center, is focusing attention during Mental Health Awareness Month on how mental health challenges don’t always look like a crisis.
The concern, Chelli notes, is that warning signs can be overlooked when a person is still going to work, keeping up with responsibilities or otherwise seeming “fine” to friends and family.
Chelli also points to the connection between mental health and substance use, emphasizing that untreated or unrecognized mental health issues can overlap with, or contribute to, substance use problems.
