SHAVANO PARK, Texas — An elderly woman was killed by her 27-year-old grandson while deputies were responding to a mental health call at their Shavano Park home, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
Sheriff Salazar provided a media briefing at intersection of NW Military Highway and End Gate Lane on Wednesday evening.
He says just before 5 p.m. they received a call from the woman specifically requesting assistance from their specialized mental health unit, SMART.
The victim had reported that her grandson was experiencing a mental health episode at the time.
A deputy that was responding from Lackland Air Force Base made contact with the woman at some point and also sent her a text message that went unanswered, Salazar said.
The deputy got to the home at 5:30 p.m. and saw a “shadowy figure” peeking through the blinds. A 27-year-old man eventually answered the door and that’s when the deputy observed blood, Salazar said.
The deputy could also see the victim lying inside the home from the doorway in what the sheriff described as a bloody scene. The suspect was eventually taken into custody at gunpoint, Salazar said.
Deputies believe the woman was possibly stabbed or bludgeoned to death by her grandson while deputies were responding to the home.
The woman, estimated to be in her 70s or 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Salazar said the suspect will likely face a murder charge. The Shavano Police Department also responded to the scene.
The sheriff tells us the suspect had a known history with Shavano police and was prone to “bouts of violence.”
