CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A first-of-its-kind mobile lifeline for Iowa veterans and first responders officially debuted Monday in Cedar Rapids.

The non-profit organization Salute to the Fallen hosted a grand unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremony inside the ImOn Ice Arena to launch the Guardian Response Unit (G.R.U.).

Built inside a completely renovated ambulance, the G.R.U. is designed to operate as a mobile mental health and resource center capable of reaching heroes and their families across the state of Iowa.

John Thompson, founder of Salute to the Fallen, said the mobile unit will reduce wait times by replacing traditional phone hotlines with in-person care.

“This gives us access to be able to help more, and actually lower the time. So right now, we’re able to get a guy into therapy within two to three days; now we’re able to bring therapy to them, whether it’s at an event, armory, or apartment,” Thompson said.

Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell was present at the event, which brought together community leaders, veterans, and local supporters. Following the formal presentation and ribbon cutting, attendees were invited to tour the converted vehicle firsthand to see the mobile therapy environment.

Organizers say the project was born out of an urgent, growing need to address mental health challenges within the service community. Thompson noted that traditional resources often create unintended barriers for people experiencing a crisis.

“The phone hotline guys call, and it’s a questionnaire process; there’s a big disconnect in that resource to the veteran community itself,” Thompson remarked. “Everyone wants to be treated as an individual, not go through the same questions everyone does. This is the awareness side; the different factor is showing that someone cares.”

Building and operating a specialized mobile response program comes with distinct financial requirements. According to the organization, the G.R.U. project relies entirely on grassroots funding, including corporate sponsorships, volunteer efforts, and private public donations to maintain its equipment, supply resources, and keep the unit deployed where it is needed most.

The Guardian Response Unit will be fully operational starting Tuesday.

Iowans won’t have to wait long to see the unit active in the community. The G.R.U. is scheduled to make a public appearance this Thursday at the Freedom Foundation in Cedar Rapids.
