TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Astra Mental Health and Recovery hosted its inaugural Breakfast for Hope and Healing Fundraiser on Tuesday, May 5, kicking off Mental Health Awareness Month.
Kathy Mosher, Astra’s CEO, along with other organization leaders, shared their work following the merger of Valeo Behavioral Health Care and Family Service and Guidance Center into a single group servicing children and adults.
Attendees also heard various stories of how Astra has made a difference for many who’ve faced mental health and substance use challenges.
“We have made a lot of progress,” said Pam Evans, Astra’s director of marketing and development. “However, there are still a lot of folks that have challenges out there that we know of, so our focus, especially in the merged organization, has been improving access. Access to make sure that we’re available when people need us.“
Susan Wallace, a long-time advocate with NAMI, was presented with Astra’s Mental Health Hero Award.
The event also featured 13 NEWS’ Melissa Brunner as its emcee.
Astra is located at 325 SW Frazier Ave. in Topeka, Kan. Learn more about its services at www.astraks.org/.
